JOHN TAYLOR ARMS
Palazzo dell'Angelo.

Etching, 1931. 185x171 mm; 7 1/4x6 3/4 inches, full margins. Edition of 100. Signed and numbered "Ed. 100" in pencil, lower margin. Ex-collection Lloyd Goodrich, former Director of the Whitney Museum of American Art. Fletcher 233.

Arms (1887-1953) was trained as an architect and only began etching as a hobby with a kit his wife had given him in the early 1910s. Like Whistler, he was captivated by the water, reflections and shimmering light of Venice. This is one of approximately 10 etchings he made of the city. The flat, frontal view of the building façade seen canal-side from water level are characteristics of Whistler's Venice etchings.
