John Way (1921-2012), also known by his Chinese name Wei Letang, was born in Shanghai and studied calligraphy as a child. He began studying Western art in 1951 and exhibited a number of times in China before emigrating to the United States in 1956, settling in Boston to study architecture and art at M.I.T. In 1965, he was included in the exhibition "Painting Without a Brush" at the Institute of Contemporary Art in Boston with artists such as Hans Hartung, Andy Warhol and Paul Jenkins, and continued to exhibit both his abstract paintings and calligraphy widely at home and abroad throughout his life.
