Casilear (1811-1893) was a Hudson River School artist. Born in New York, he trained with Asher Durand, then an engraver, and both worked as professional prinitmakers during the 1830s. Following Durand's lead, he had abadoned engraving by mid-century and from the 1850s onward worked mainly as a painter, exhibiting frequently in New York at the National Academy of Design and elsewhere.
