JOHN WILSON (1922 - )
Mother and Child.

Lithograph, 1952. 545x507 mm; 21x18 1/2 inches, full margins. Signed, titled, dated and numbered 43/50 in pencil, lower margin. Printed by José Sanchez at the Taller de Gráfica Popular, Mexico City. Horizontal crease through image. A superb, richly-inked impression of this scarce print.

John Wilson's Mother and Child, a study for the 1952 mural Incident in Teotihuacan, Mexico, is one of his most impressive lithographs, a tour-de-force drawing of contrast and volume. This is the larger and earlier of the two versions, and is the first known impression of this edition to come to auction. In addition to some differences in the drawing, in this version, the artist's signature and date are also added in the stone, lower left. Another impression is in the collection of the Cleveland Museum of Art.
