JOHN WILSON (1922 - 2015)
La Calle.

Color lithograph on thin wove paper, 1951. 205x355 mm; 8x14 inches, wide (full ?) margins. Signed, titled, dated and numbered 14/22 in pencil, lower margin. Printed at the Taller de Gráfica Popular, Mexico City.

Illustrated (another impression): In the Spirit of Resistance, African-American Modernists and the Mexican Muralist School, 1996, pl. 88, p. 163.

A very good impression of this scarce lithograph - we have not found another impression at auction in 15 years.

In 1950, John Wilson was awarded a John Hay Whitney fellowship which enabled him and his wife to move to Mexico City. There he joined Elizabeth Catlett and enrolled at La Esmeralda School to study mural painting. Catlett also introduced Wilson to the Taller de Gráfica Popular where he produced a number of lithographs depicting Mexican workers and street scenes. The Wilsons lived in Mexico until 1956 before returning to the US.
