Additional Details

Albert J. "Budd" Johnson (1910-1984), tenor sax player, pianist and arranger was born in Dallas, Texas. He received his early musical training from his father (a reed and organ player) as did his brother Keg Johnson. In his youth, Johnson studied piano with Booker T. Washington's daughter, Portia. In a career that spanned over a half century, Johnson played with virtually everyone from Louis Armstrong and Fletcher Henderson in the 1930's to Phil Woods in 1984 (The Old Dude and the Fundance Kid, Uptown Records). Johnson is considered to be a pivotal figure in the changeover from swing to bop. He was the music director for both Earl "Fatha" Hines, and the Billy Eckstine orchestras, and he wrote arrangements for Woody Herman and Buddy Rich.
