Estimate: $ 500 - $ 750
JOHNSTON HARVESTER. Circa 1900.
31 1/2x23 1/4 inches. Robert & Co., Paris.
Condition B+: restoration and restored losses in upper left margin; minor discoloration in margins.
Farmers in their green, yellow and orange fields, plowing, cutting and baling with their bright red Johnston equipment. Pre-dating automobiles and engines, all the machines, regardless of their sophisticated purposes, are all powered by horses! The Johnston Harvester company moved to Batavia, New York, in 1883 after their near-by factory burned down. They exhibited at the 1904 St. Louis World's Fair and by 1940 their factory occupied over 1 million square feet and employed over 2000 people. An exceptional, early document for an American company whose products were, apparently, sold world-wide.
