Additional Details

A remarkable survival given the poor quality of material used. Thomas H. Jones was born to slave parents near Wilmington, NC. He was sold to a storekeeper while still quite young and was able to gain a rudimentary education. He experienced a succession of masters, a marriage, the loss of his wife (having been sold), and another marriage yielding several children. In 1849 Jones found out that his master was going to separate his family. The thought of losing a family twice prompted him to send his family away and he soon followed. Once free, Joines joined the anti-slavery movement and lectured for several years. In 1854 his narrative was published in order to raise funds to free a son still in bondage.<
