JORIS HOEFNAGEL (CIRCLE OF)
(Antwerp 1542-1601 Vienna)
Still Life with Flowers, Insects and a Snail.

Watercolor, gouache and gold on vellum, 1589. 165x125 mm; 6 1/2x5 inches. Initialed, annotated and dated in gold, lower center recto.

There is a similar still life study in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York (2008.110), also from 1589. According to the museum, their drawing is among the earliest independent still lifes by a Netherlandish artist and was created during his time in Munich.

The Latin inscription lower center, "Omnia mutantur, nihil interit," meaning, "Everything changes, nothing perishes," is from Ovid, Metamorphoses, book XV, line 165.
