JOSE BELON (1861-1927) MOULIN ROUGE. 1891.
50 1/2x38 1/2 inches, 128x98 cm. Camis, Paris.
Condition B+: restoration and overpainting along unobtrusive vertical and horizontal folds; overpainting in image.
Despite the popularity and near-immediate immortality of Toulouse-Lautrec's poster for the Moulin Rouge the music hall needed to continue advertising. They chose Jose Belon for the next poster. Belon was another Montmartre artist who contributed illustrations to the Chat Noir and Gil Blas. He focuses on the clubs' namesake structure, the windmill, making each vane a vignette for a humorous, illicit or sexy rendezvous. Dancers, aristocrats, pierrots, clowns, cocottes, cupids and revelers of all sorts express the uninhibited spirit that the club offered. DFP II 59, Maindron 39, Reims 229, Sagot 329.
