JOSEF MULLER-BROCKMANN (1914-1996) 4 JUNIFESTKONZERT. 1957.
50 3/8x35 3/4 inches. J. Muller-Brockmann, Zurich.
Condition A. Paper.
From the 1950s onwards, Muller-Brockmann was the undisputed leader of the Zurich post-war graphic school. Originally trained as a photographer, he went on to work as a designer, typographer, teacher, theoretician and author. His dramatic photomontages for the Swiss Automobile Club (see Swann Modernist Poster Auction #1935, lot 102) are lauded as icons of the rigorous Swiss approach to graphic design. This poster is one of his abstract series for Juni Festwochen Zurich, which bear his stylized minimal constructivist approach. Muller-Brockmann had a monopoly on the posters designed for Zurich's Tonhalle (concert series), and he approached all of these projects (such as Musica Viva) using strict geometrical patterns, differentiating between events by using different geometrical patterns in his designs, creating a different visual identity for each series. Muller-Brockmann p. 124.
