JOSEPH BINDER (1898-1972) UNITED AIR LINES / SAN FRANCISCO. 1957. 40 1/8x25 inches. Condition B+: repaired tears and creases in margins and image. Joseph Binder studied art under the great Secessionist Alfred Roller, and became one of the most promising modernist graphic designers in Austria. He emigrated to America in 1934, continued working in the field, and was awarded many prizes in different poster competitions. "He applied reductive compositional principles derived from Cubism and De Stijl to his posters . . . [focussing] on the reduction of geometric forms, on color contrasts and the psychological impact of colors" (http://www.aiga.org/content.cfm?contentalias=josephbinder). Among the many companies he worked for were United Airlines and The American Red Cross. He designed covers for Fortune and Graphis magazines and, in 1948, was appointed art director and designer for the U.S. Navy. His compelling, colorful, graphic series for United included images of Washington D.C., Colorado and New England.
