JOSEPH DAVIEL DE LA NEZIERE (1873-1944)

MARSEILLE - ALEXANDRIE / LA ROUTE D'ÉGYPTE. 1927.

42 1/2x31 inches, 108x78 3/4 cm. Vaugirard, Paris.
Condition A-: small repaired tears in margins; slight darkening at left edge.

Promoting travel between France and Egypt, this poster draws on the fascination with Egyptology that gripped the world in the years following the discovery of the Tomb of Tutankhamun in 1922. "Joseph de la Neziere was a painter and a great traveler. His frequent visits to North Africa provided him with material for a number of posters and he was artistic director for the Moroccan section at the Exposition Coloniale de Marseille in 1922" (Orientalist p. 40). Note how the PLM railway initials appear in hieroglyphic cartouches on either side of the lower text box.
