JOSEPH ERNEST SAMPSON (1887-1946)

JASPER NATIONAL PARK / CANADIAN NATIONAL RAILWAYS. Circa 1930s.

39x29 inches, 99x73 1/2 cm.
Condition B+: expert overpainting at edges and in image; bleach spots and discoloration in background; stenciled and screen-printed poster on board.

Canadian National Railways was formed in 1918, and ultimately became a conglomeration of many smaller railway companies. In 1923, when it took over the Grand Trunk Railway, it became the largest Canadian railway company (taking control of the three coast-to-coast rail lines in Canada - The Canadian Pacific, which was the first, Grand Trunk Pacific Railway and the Canadian Northern Railway). Sampson was an artist, designer and printmaker, ultimately best known for the silkscreen prints designed by his company, Sampson-Matthews. He also designed Canadian propaganda posters during both World Wars. Some of his silkscreen prints of mountain landscape scenes are in the same style as this rare poster for Canadian National Railways. We could find no other examples at auction.
