JOSEPH-HENRI PONCHIN (1897-1962)

CAMBODGE ANGKOR / FRENCH INDO - CHINA. 1931.

42¼x27½ inches, 107¼x69¾ cm. D'Extrême-Orient, Hanoi.
Condition A-: overpainting around border and at edges; minor restoration in image; with English text banner at bottom.

Printed in Hanoi during the height of French colonialism, this poster is one in an exceptional series of Art Deco travel posters for Indochina designed by Ponchin. The French took control of Indochina (Cambodia, Laos and Vietnam) in 1863 and effectively stayed in power until 1953. Here, the artist depicts the wonders of the ancient Angkor temples in the jungles of Cambodia. This poster is typically seen with French text at the bottom "L'Indochine Française."
