JOSEPH-HENRI PONCHIN (1897-1962) CAMBODGE PNOM PENH / L'INDOCHINE FRANÇAISE. 1931.
43 1/4x29 inches, 110x73 3/4 cm. D'Extreme-Orient, Hanoi.
Condition A-: expertly-repaired tears and restoration in margins; slight staining and darkening in margins and text.
Printed in Hanoi during the height of French colonialism, this poster is one in an exceptional series of at least six Art Deco travel posters for Indochina designed by Ponchin. The French took control of Indochina (Cambodia, Laos and Vietnam) in 1863 and effectively stayed in power until 1953. This poster captures a masterful, pastel-hued pastiche of the highlights of Phnom Penh, combining culture, religion, history and wildlife.
