JOSEPH HENRY SHARP
Still Life with Poppies.

Oil on canvas, 1890. 580x405 mm; 22 3/4x16 inches. Signed and dated in oil, lower left recto.

Ex-collection private collection, New York.

Sharp (1859-1953) was an American painter known mostly for his paintings of Native Americans and New Mexico, and he was commissioned by Theodore Roosevelt to paint the portraits of Native Americans who survived the Battle of the Little Bighorn, Montana. Sharp is considered among the first of a wave of many American artists who moved from the East Coast or Midwest to live and work in New Mexico, along with later luminaries such as John Sloan (see lot 35), Gustave Baumann, Georgia O'Keeffe and Alfred Stieglitz, who were similarly inspried by the Southwestern landscape.
