In 1867, Rutgers and Princeton played the first intercollegiate game of football. By 1880, the number of players on a team had been set at 11, and the game took off in popularity. In 1920, the American Professional Football Association was formed. Here, a student takes a break from reading to watch colleagues throw themselves at each other. In Gould's posters, "The color schemes . . . are simple and brilliant without a suspicion of that rawness which comes from the unskillful contrast of large masses of primary colors." His posters "achieve emphasis without brutality" (Charles Hiatt, The Poster and Art Collector, Volume VI). Kiehl 86, DFP-I 254, Keay p. 59.
