JOSEPH J. GOULD, JR. (1880-1935) LIPPINCOTT'S SEPTEMBER. 1896.
20x14 1/2 inches, 50 3/4x36 3/4 cm. J.B. Lippincott Co., [Philadelphia.]
Condition A: minor creases in margins and image. Hinged to mat at top edge. Paper.
J.J. Gould, a student from the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and a Philadelphia native, took over as the designer of Lippincott's monthly posters when his predecessor, Carqueville, left for Paris. Many contemporary critics cited his work as derivative of Penfield's, using such unflattering phrases as "ordinary" and "absent of vigor." However, Kiehl accurately interprets his work; "His compositions lacked the static frontal quality of Penfield's figures, implied greater movement through diagonal composition, and relied on planes of non primary color" (Kiehl p. 187). DFP-I 252, Kiehl 84.
