JOSEPH M. W. TURNER (CIRCLE OF)
(London 1775-1851 London)
From Ehrenbreitstein.

Watercolor on cream wove paper mounted on card stock. 205x325 mm; 8x12 3/4 inches.

According to Professor David Hill, School of Fine Art, University of Leeds, and noted Turner specialist, this is likely an original J.M.W. Turner watercolor, created by Turner during his tour of the Rhine in 1817. It is from a series of approximately 50 watercolors of the Rhine by Turner which were painted on the spot and sold by the artist to his Yorkshire patron Walter Fawkes of Farnley Hall. This group of watercolors was dispersed in various sales from Farnley after 1890.

The composition of this watercolor is known from a copy made at Farnley Hall in the late 1800s which appeared on the market a few years ago.
