JOSEPH PENNELL
The Spanish Steps, Rome.

Pen and ink and wash on paper, 1894. 349x542 mm; 13 3/4x21 3/8 inches. Initialed and dated in ink, lower left recto.

Pennell (1857-1926) was born and trained in Philadelphia. Inspired by James A. M. Whistler, who was his mentor, he settled in London during the 1880s and remined in Europe through most of his career. Pennell's style vacillated between an illustrative approach, manifest in the current lot and evidence of his training at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art, Philadelphia, and work for Scribner's Magazine and the Century Magazine in the early 1880s, to a more fluid handling in imitation of Whistler's impressionistic watercolors (see lots 23 and 24).
