Three illustrated magazines were at the heart of the graphic revolution that swept through Germany in the 1890s: Simplicissimus and Jugend in Munich and Pan in Berlin. The magazines were so influential that Sattler's image instantly became an icon and was one of the only German posters reproduced in Les Maitres de l'Affiche). The poster was originally published in a small format to be put in bookstores, and La Plume offered this extreme rarity for sale to collectors for 10 francs, as item #257 in its Album d'Affiches et Estampes. As Pan was a magazine that was geared towards bibliophiles and art lovers, part of their service to their readers was to include supplemental lithographs (the most famous being Lautrec's bust portrait of Madame Lender). The copy we have here is the Pan supplement, smaller than the original, carefully printed under the artist's supervision. DFP-III 2791, Maitres pl. 67.
