JOSEPH SOLMAN
Group of 15 collages.

Paper collages, with elements from books and magazines, 1938. Each signed and dated in pencil, verso. Various sizes and conditions.

With a bound volume of photocopies of these and a handful of other collages by the artist. In an introduction, Solman writes, "In 1938 I was sent to the Spokane Art Center in Washington to arrange exhibitions under the auspices of the WPA government project. As the New Year of 1939 approached my wife and I decided to send a series of season's greetings to our many friends in New York City. I decided on the playful form of collage. Armed with yellowing books on engineering, mid-Victorian Manners and horse disease which I had picked up on the stall of an old bookshop, I began to scissor and glue fragments from these arcane works. None of the mailed greetings were ever preserved nor were they expected to be. But in warming up to the series I produced an overflow which I somehow saved."
