JOSH GOSFIELD (DATES UNKNOWN)

Censorship is UnAmerican.
Offset lithograph poster. 915x610 mm, 36x24 inches. 1990.

"Commissioned by Virgin Records when an album by the rap group, 2 Live Crew, was outlawed for obscenity in parts of Florida in June 1990. The poster promotes freedom of speech while showing the opposite — the white hand of the U.S. government covering the mouth of a young African American. When these posters were plastered around Los Angeles, graffiti artists sometimes replaced the word UN with VERY, so the poster read, 'Censorship is Very American.'"

Subsequently, this image was re-used by MTV as part of their "Rock the Vote" campaign in 1996.
