Onyx Collective was founded by Isaiah Barr and Austin Williamson in New York in 2014 as a jazz ensemble. Since its inception, Onyx Collective has grown to include a record label and studio, fashion brand, and an online radio station. The present drawing was used to advertise the group's upcoming concert at Gengis Cohen ("Ghengis" [sic]), a New York style Chinese food restaurant and live music venue founded by music producer Allan Rinde, located in the Fairfax district of Los Angeles. Josh Smith, a mulit-disciplinary artist, rose to prominence in the early 2000s creating abstract, colorful paintings depicting his name.
