JOSH SMITH
Untitled.

Oil on canvas, 2007. 865x713 mm; 30x24 inches. Signed and dated twice in felt-tip pen and black ink, verso. Ex-collection Luhring Augustine, New York, with the labels on the frame back.

Originally from Tennessee, Josh Smith (1976- ) is a multi-medium artist based in New York. Addressing painting through a form of Expressionist Pop Art, Josh is known for repeatedly painting several motifs including his name, a leaf and a fish, a witty way to suggest the functioning role of the artist rather than visual appeal. Smith looks for objects one can strip the meaning out of it. 'Josh Smith' is a common, simple name, the artist and the viewer work together to create something interesting. Josh has exhibited world wide, possibly one of his more notable concepts, On The Water, his exhibition at Deitch Studios, New York, when Smith painted forty-seven paintings directly on the wall, spaced evenly apart as if they were canvases hung on the wall.
