San Sebastian was the site of numerous wars and sieges until the late 19th century when the royal court of Madrid took up summer residence there. The city soon became a popular tourist destination and spa resort during the Belle Epoque, attracting wealthy vacationers with a race track, casino and golf course. Segrelles was a Spanish artist, who after a brief stint with British publications, eventually relocated to New York City to pursue a career as an illustrator for publications such as Redbook and Cosmopolitan. He also designed a small number of Spanish posters like this one, as well as for automobile races and sporting events in Barcelona and the Real Aero Club de Cataluña.
