second american edition, number 45 of 100 copies. Buchman recalls that he and Johnson "thought it might be a worthwhile effort to print 'Pomes', since there was no American edition we knew of, and since we assumed that Miss Beach would readily grant permission for an edition of 100 copies. After the book was printed, we were emphatically told by Miss Beach in a letter [...] that we would be beheaded, or such, if we dared to print 'Pomes'. Since 'Pomes' had already been printed, we had little choice but to destroy the books or give them away. We chose the latter, though if my memory is correct, we sold about 20 copies--no more--for about $1.00 each" (quoted in Slocum and Cahoon A26).
