Additional Details

the first illustrated haggadah printed in italy, and the only hebrew block book. Apart from 3 pages at the beginning, one in the middle, and the last page, the layout and typography reproduce that of the 1526 Prague Haggadah, replacing the decoration of that edition with illustrations in Italian Renaissance style. These include depictions of Abraham crossing the Euphrates in a gondola, the Wicked Son as a condottiere, and the Wise Son copied in reverse from Michelangelo''s painting of the prophet Jeremiah on the Sistine Chapel ceiling. Vinograd, Mantua 67-68; Yaari 18; Yerushalmi, Haggadah and History, pages 37-39 and plates 22-26.
