Additional Details

Originally planned as a dictionary of economics and technology, Krünitz's encyclopedia became increasingly general in scope and ultimately ran to 242 volumes, "one of the largest works of its kind ever published" (Collison). Pages 293 to 617 of this volume comprise a book-length entry for "Jude" (Jew), followed by cross-references and related articles continuing to page 645. The text is noteworthy for its comprehensive documentation of legislation pertaining to Jews and extended discussion of Christian Wilhelm von Dohm's then recent plea for Jewish emancipation. Collison, Encyclopaedias, pages 108-09; Ochs, Imago Judaica, page 23.
