Grun rose to prominence as the King of Cabaret advertising in Montmartre, thanks to his captivating posters of voluptuous dancing girls dressed in red against black backgrounds. After he achieved this "fame" he got married and became a respected artist. Yet he continued to design posters for the travel and tourism industries. In this field he created an unsurpassed series of five posters for Monte Carlo, the most elegant resort of the French Riviera. In this playground of the rich and famous, where the Gotha would gather, the blasé crowds were always in search of events to amuse themselves: and the Dog Show was just such an event. Grun designs the image in shades of brown, suitable for depicting the canine competitors, and he makes the image really stand out by saturating the background with sunlight. Grun p. 128.
