JULES CHÉRET (1836-1932) CASINO DE PARIS / CAMILLE STEFANIE. 1891.
96x33 inches, 244x84 cm. Chaix, Paris.
Condition B+: restoration along vertical and horizontal folds; creases and abrasions in margins and image. Two sheets. Framed.
Chéret, a genius with color and movement, was famous for his ebullient depictions of women. Although he excelled at the free-hand style in which he depicted his beloved Cherettes, he was not particularly accomplished as a portraitist. His two posters for Camille Stefani are an exception. In both, he depicts the chanteuse with fine attention to her pronounced features and in a pose that reflects her stance during a performance. Aside from the performer Chéret fills the rest of the poster with his signature, colorful motifs: a cascade of acrobats, women, clowns and pierrots in the background, ending up in a pile of musical instruments at the bottom. Broido 211, DFP II 214, Reims 290, Maindron 185.
