JULES CHÉRET (1836-1932) QUINQUINA DUBONNET. 1895. Courier Français supplement.
21 1/2x15 1/4 inches. Chaix, Paris.
Condition A- / B+: minor restoration in image; horizontal fold.
Originally a wine and spirit wholesaler, began marketing their own brand of quinine wine in 1880. Chéret designed two posters for the company, each depicting a woman drinking with a cat at her side. The cat was Dubonnet's emblem, and is still seen on the company's labels today. Both of Chéret's Dubonnet posters appeared as supplements to Le Courier Français. In the 1930s Dubonnet benefited from more inspired creativity, as A. M. Cassandre's posters helped drive them to the top of the market. Broido 871.
