Carmelli's career spanned the 1880s-1910s. Though a partial invalid he was a masterful magician. He spent ten years performing at the Théâtre Robert-Houdin before starting up his own touring show. In addition to his renown as a conjurer, Carmelli's fame has been assured through this poster which is among the best-known of all 19th-century magic posters.
