Jules Chéret was a pioneer in the concept of advertising. In 1893 he designed a series of posters promoting the performances of Loïe Fuller at the Folies-Bergère. These progressive images conveyed a cinematic effect; all four images were the same, but in different colors, and when displayed side by side, they captured the nature of Fuller's luminous performance. Her act was called the Snake Dance, and effectively used multi-colored lights, which were reflected off the diaphanous veils she wore. Chéret's sequence shows the variations of light during the dance. DFP II 233, Reims 411, Maîtres 73, Maindron 113, Chéret 155, Triumph des Jugendstils p. 27.
