JULES CHÉRET (1836-1932) PANTOMIMES LUMINEUSES / MUSÉE GRÉVIN. 1892.
48 3/4x34 1/2 inches. Chaix, Paris.
Condition B+: restoration along vertical and horizontal folds; restored pin holes in top margin; minor creases in image.
Chéret designed over 20 posters for the Musée Grevin. For this image, advertising an early form of movie that was basically a projected shadow show that had been popularized in the Chat Noir, he uses one of his classic images of a Cherette and Pierrot. He is clearly trying to evoke the light effects, which were the main appeal of the show. Broido 468, Maindron 381, DFP-II 227, Chéret 604.
