JULES CHERET (1836-1932) FANTASIE PARISIAN. Circa 1885.
191/2x121/2 inches.
Condition A: horizontal fold. Framed.
This undated image is from the Paris Illustre. Broido does not list it as one of Cheret's decorative panels (she only mentions six), nor does she reproduce it as a poster. [Since it is undated, it is almost impossible to identify.] It is an exquisite composition filled with all of Cheret's favorite visual motifs and devices, including an enthusiastic violinist, allegories of the Arts, two children in the foreground playing with dolls, and, dancers in the background. Judging from the color scheme and the layout, this piece dates to around 1885-88. It also must be exceedingly rare, as posters before lettering during those years were very unusual.
