JULES CHERET (1836-1932) HALLE AUX CHAPEAUX. 1892.
48 1/2x33 3/4 inches. Chaix, Paris.
Condition A-: water stain in bottom right corner. Framed.
Between 1888 and 1897, La Halle aux Chapeaux was one of Cheret's regular clients. The store billed itself as the largest entrepôt [warehouse] for hats in Paris. Situated on the rue de Belleville, in the heart of a solid working class neighborhood, it was not a luxury store. But in the days when everyone wore hats, it was certainly a prosperous business. In this charming image, a woman is out with her family shopping for a hat. As in many Cheret images, the man is depicted in silhouette in the background. The little girl, who is having fun playing dress-up and imitating her mother, was featured individually on another poster Cheret designed for the store.
