JULES CHERET (1836-1932) L'ARC EN CIEL. 1893. 46 7/8x34 3/8 inches. Condition B+: minor loses along tears through left edge; creases and abrasions in image. Framed. This poster, for a ballet / pantomime called l'Arc en Ciel [The Rainbow], represents Cheret at the height of his artistic maturity. Cheret's mastery of lithography enabled him to take the three primary colors and turn them into a veritable (and in this case literal) rainbow. In addition to his exquisite use of colors, he also employs his signature design element of a cascade of characters, joyfully free-falling against the background, and within the group are his favorite characters, a Cherette and a Pierrot. This image, epitomizing as it does, every wonderful aspect of Cheret's art, was selected to be printed in a small run without any text for collectors.
