JULES CHERET (1836-1932) OLYMPIA. 1893.
24x161/4 inches. Chaix, Paris.
Condition A-: overpainting in top margin; large crease in image; vertical and horizontal folds.
When he was forced to tear down his Montagnes Russes roller coaster attraction, Joseph Oller used the same location to build a music hall, Olympia, which remains on the site today. When the Music Hall opened, Cheret created one of his most flamboyant designs. The image must have been particularly pleasing for him as he used it for a smaller format poster the following year. And this smaller format, in turn, was used for several events as a stock poster, to promote bal masques. Broido 345, Maindron 278, Maitres 133, DFP II 225.
