JULES CHERET (1836-1932) PALAIS DE GLACE. 1894.
24x15 1/2 inches. Chaix, Paris.
Condition B+: darkening along lower edge; minor chipping along right edge.
Between 1895 and 1900, Cheret designed a gallery of skating girls, sometimes depicted alone and sometimes with a companion, for Paris's most elegant ice-skating rink, the Palais de Glace, located on the Champs-Elysées. For this image he depicts the young woman diagonally, which captures the pendulum-like movement of skating. The position of the other skaters silhouetted in the background adds to the overall visual effect of the poster. This particular image was published along with the January 20, 1895 issue of Le Courrier Français, a journal of the poster world, which would also print full color reproductions of some of Cheret's posters. Broido 367, Wember 179.
