In the 1880s l'Hippodrome was one of Cheret's biggest accounts. This large arena that had originally been dedicated to horse shows began to host all sorts of variety and exotic performances, ranging from acrobats to elephants to clowns. The venue also capitalized on the growing popular interest in the regions that were becoming parts of the French colonial empire and featured colorful tableaux and performances featuring exotic characters and animals from all over the world.
