JULES CHÉRET (1836-1932)

ALCAZAR D'ÉTÉ / REVUE FIN DE SIÈCLE. 1890.

48x33 1/2 inches, 122x85 cm. Chaix, Paris.
Condition B: restored losses at top margin; water staining at bottom edge, into text and image; minor creases and repaired tears at edges, some into image; creases and restoration along vertical and horizontal folds; minor loss in bottom left corner.

The Alcazar d'Été was one of Paris' most popular café-concerts, for which Chéret designed a number of different posters. Most of his images depict acts or performers that were appearing on stage, but this image evokes the decadent flamboyance of the theatre itself; it highlights a spirited performer with a mischievous twinkle in her eye, literally bringing one of the patrons to his knees. Broido 170, DFP-II 189, Maindron 150, Cheret 216.
