JULES CHÉRET (1836-1932)

"A scimitar and pike weave through the title of this early poster, which was designed to tell a story rather than, as later in the art, to have a striking impact" (Opera p. xxi). Chéret studied lithography in London from 1859-1866. Prior to his studies he designed a few posters for operettas (the earliest in 1858), but upon returning to Paris his recognizable style started taking shape and he began his storied career designing posters. This design is among Chéret's earlier works after his return to Paris. Cheret 49, Broido 39, Maindron 35, Opera 30.
