Some of Tennyson's early poems were in print even before he was an undergraduate at Trinity College, Cambridge, when he won the Chancellor's Prize for Poetry. After he published a two-volume collection of his poetry in 1842, Tennyson became the most popular poet of the age. He was made Queen Victoria's poet laureate in 1850.
