Throughout his working life at the Colonial Office (for which he was knighted in 1869), Henry Taylor (1800-1886) was a prolific author. His best-known works were four verse plays, including Philip von Artevelde, a drama based on the Elizabethan model, and The Statesman, his ironic view on the art of success.
