Weir (1852-1919) was a widely-respected American artist and founding member of the Ten American Painters group (or The Ten), which was formed in 1897 in opposition to the institutional restraints of the Society of American Artists. He exhibited in the 1913 Armory Show, though he did not conceal his distaste for many of the fellow artist exhibitors working in the new modernist style (he dubbed the Cubist Room of Picassos and Braques in the Armory Show "worse than the chamber of horrors"). Nevertheless, he recognized the modernist artists as the success behind the Armory Show, stating, "These young artists are getting at the real thing; they are the ones to watch. Our work is a thing done." The modernist style and use of color in the current lot, a departure from Weir's traditional work, is perhaps a nod to the modern artistic influences of the Armory Show.
