JULIO DE DIEGO (1900-1979) SHERMAN HOTEL LAUNDRY BAG.
26 1/2x17 5/8 inches.
Condition A-: string attached to recto; time staining; vertical and horizontal folds.
Born in Spain, de Diego moved to Chicago in 1926 where he found work designing magazine covers. He was a painter, muralist and fashion designer and also achieved some level of fame as the husband of Gypsy Rose Lee. One of his murals was for Chicago's infamous Sherman Hotel. On a much smaller scale he also designed the hotel's laundry bags. This innovative use of graphic design is an exceptional Art Deco image and is an extraordinary Jazz Age relic. The hotel itself, founded by the father of the famed Civil War general, rose to prominence in the 1920s and 1930s not only as the biggest hotel west of New York City, but also for its restaurant, The College Inn, where jazz was introduced to mainstream Chicago. As a result of this notable jazz venue, the hotel became one of Chicago's elite hotspots during the 1920s and 30s and gained some notoriety as the location chosen by Al Capone for an important mob meeting in 1926.
