JULIS KLINGER (1876-1942) KUNSTLER PLAKATE.
361/2x271/4J. E. Wolfensberger, Zurich.
Condition A.
This poster is quite a surprising discovery. Not only is it previously unrecorded, but there is no historical record that Julius Klinger did any business in Switzerland. Most likely it dates from the 1920s when publications and exhibitions of his work made him famous worldwide. One can imagine that Johann Edwin Wolfensberger, the godfather of Swiss lithographers, asked Klinger to design a poster (just as the London Underground commissioned Klinger to do a poster while he was living in Vienna). The minimal, humorous drawing of a duck, eggs and (perhaps) ink spots, is reminiscent of Klinger's 1909 poster Der Humor in der Reklame, in which he depicted a hen and an egg. The intriguing question is why Wolfensberger would print a poster designed by Klinger without having it widely circulated.
