JULIUS KLINGER (1876-1942) DER FELDHERRNHUGEL LUSTSPIEL-HAUS. Circa 1910.
27x37 1/2 inches. Hollerbaum & Schmidt, Berlin.
Condition A-: restoration and overpainting in margins and corners.
Klinger studied art in Vienna but settled in Berlin, where he worked for the printer and publisher Hollerbaum & Schmidt, as well as for the satiric magazine Lustige Blätter<>. A prolific, versatile and inventive graphic artist, his style ranged from strictly typographic pieces to daring constructions. It is evident, however, that his preferred means of design was as a genius caricaturist. This poster, for an anti-militarist, satiric play, is an ideal example. It shows the difference between over-organized Prussians and easy going Austrians. No words are needed: they seem ridiculous simply by the way Klinger draws them. With flat tones, he caricatures two officers, behind whom is a line of other officers, all seen only from the shoulders up. DFP III, 1709, Masters p.158, Kunst, Kommerz, Visionen p. 94.
